The walk is about 45 minutes each way on a clear path along the lake shore, rising gradually to the cliffs at Trælanípa. The famous perspective — the lake seeming to sit far above the Atlantic — is a trick of the viewing angle, and it works.

The cliff edge at Trælanípa is unfenced and the drop is around 140 metres. The turf overhangs the rock in places.
