What to pack
What do I actually need to bring?
Wind-proof rather than warm, waterproof boots, and no umbrella.
The short version
- Windproof shell matters more than insulation.
- Waterproof boots with ankle support — the ground is wet year-round.
- An umbrella is useless here.
Pack for wind and horizontal rain rather than cold. The temperature rarely justifies a heavy coat; the wind almost always justifies a proper shell.
The list that matters
- A genuinely windproof and waterproof jacket with a hood that stays up.
- Waterproof walking boots with ankle support.
- Layers you can add and remove without stopping.
- Waterproof trousers, which you will be glad of at least once.
- A dry bag or waterproof case for a phone or camera.
Leave the umbrella. Rain arrives sideways and umbrellas invert immediately.
