Getting around

Using the bus network

Are the buses actually useful?

The blue city buses in Tórshavn are free and frequent. The red national coaches are useful but sparse.

The short version
  • Bussleiðin city buses in Tórshavn are free to ride.
  • National routes are numbered by region — 100s Streymoy, 300s Vágar, 400s/500s north.
  • Rural frequency is low and services stop early.

There are two systems. Bussleiðin runs the blue buses inside Tórshavn municipality and they are free. Strandfaraskip Landsins runs the red coaches between towns, which are paid.

Routes worth knowing

  • 300 — Airport to Tórshavn, the single most useful route for visitors.
  • 400 — Klaksvík to Tórshavn, the northern trunk.
  • 100 — Tórshavn to Vestmanna.
  • 201 — Oyrarbakki to Gjógv, on request only with two hours notice.
