Four days without a car

A genuinely car-free trip that does not pretend you can reach places you cannot.

Do you need a car?
No
Rough cost per person
7.000 DKK 12.500 DKK

Per person, excluding flights. No car, so no tolls, fuel or rental excess.

Who this suits

  • Travellers who do not drive or do not want to
  • Solo travellers watching costs
  • Anyone nervous about single-lane tunnels

Day by day

Day1

Bus in, and stay central

Bus 300 from the airport, then the old town.

  • Stay in the centre. On this trip, walkability is the whole plan.

If the weather turns: No impact.

Day2

Kirkjubøur on foot

The marked path over the ridge, about two hours each way, or the bus.

Sleep in Tórshavn Weather-dependent
  • Check the return bus before you set out.

If the weather turns: Take the bus both ways and spend longer at the farmhouse.

Day3

Nólsoy by ferry

A short crossing from the harbour to an island with one village and a good walk.

Sleep in Tórshavn Weather-dependent
  • Short, frequent and the most reliable ferry in the country.
  • Bring lunch — options on the island are minimal.

If the weather turns: Swap to the National Gallery and Nordic House, both walkable.

Day4

Klaksvík by bus, or a slow morning

Route 400 north for the day, or stay put and leave unhurried.

  • Route 400 takes around 75 minutes each way. Check the last return.
  • Leave three hours for the airport bus before the flight.

If the weather turns: Klaksvík has a swimming pool and a brewery. Both fine.

Where this plan is fragile

  • Gjógv, Saksun and most trailheads are not reachable on this trip. That is the honest trade.
  • Rural buses stop early — always confirm the return before committing to the outbound.
