7 nights

Seven days

Enough time to include either Mykines or Suðuroy, and to lose a day to weather without losing the trip.

Do you need a car?
Yes
Rough cost per person
15.000 DKK 27.000 DKK

Per person, excluding flights, including car, tolls, one ferry and access fees.

Who this suits

  • A proper first trip, or a returning visitor
  • Photographers and walkers
  • Anyone who wants Mykines or Suðuroy

Day by day

Day1

Arrive at Vágar

Stay near the airport and start properly tomorrow.

If the weather turns: No impact.

Day2

Mykines, if it sails

The puffin island. Keep this day flexible and be ready to swap it.

Sleep in Sørvágur Weather-dependent
  • Summer season only. Book as far ahead as booking opens.
  • Parts of the lighthouse walk need a guide in some seasons.

If the weather turns: If the crossing is cancelled, do Sørvágsvatn and Gásadalur today and try Mykines again on day six.

Day3

Across to Tórshavn

The lake and the waterfall if you have not done them, then east.

Sleep in Tórshavn Car needed Weather-dependent

If the weather turns: Go straight over and take the afternoon in town.

Day4

Tórshavn on foot

Old town, galleries, Kirkjubøur, and a good dinner.

If the weather turns: Fine in any weather.

Day5

North to Klaksvík

Through the subsea tunnel to the second town.

  • Restock here — it is the last real supermarket going north.

If the weather turns: The drive and the town both work in rain.

Day6

Kalsoy and the Kallur lighthouse

The small car ferry, then the walk out to the lighthouse.

Sleep in Klaksvík Weather-dependent
  • Ferry capacity is the constraint. Arrive very early, or go on foot.
  • The lighthouse walk is exposed and slippery in wet weather.

If the weather turns: In low cloud the walk shows nothing. Klaksvík itself, the pool and the brewery fill a day.

Day7

South and out

The long drive back to Vágar, with Eiði or Saksun on the way.

  • Allow three hours to the airport from Klaksvík with a stop.

If the weather turns: Drive direct.

Where this plan is fragile

  • Mykines is the single most likely thing to be cancelled. Day six is the deliberate second chance.
  • Substituting Suðuroy for the north means two nights there, not a day trip.
